Science for Grades K-5

Global Citizens School will use the Full Option Science System (FOSS) curriculum for science for grades K-5.  The FOSS curriculum is aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).  Also, FOSS investigations use multisensory methods incorporating all five senses to promote a deeper understanding of scientific concepts.  The FOSS curriculum was initially designed in 1970 for children who had physical disabilities. Now, the multisensory investigations not only to accommodate children with special needs, but also to enhance the information gathering experience for all children, including children learning English as a second language.  FOSS refers to the inquiry-based learning approach as “Active Investigation” and aligns with our focus on children developing the skills to inquire, challenge assumptions, and problem-solve.  The active investigations begin with the children freely exploring materials before discussing their discoveries and additional questions often arise when children seek answers to the guiding questions.  Language teachers will collaborate with English teachers to plan the key vocabulary, activities, and procedures they will teach in order to ensure children to engage successfully in investigations.
