Mathematics for Grades K-5

The curriculum selected for grades K-5 is Illustrative Mathematics (IM), a problem-based curriculum designed to address content and practice standards to foster learning for all children. The curriculum is being designed under the leadership of one of the Common Core chief officers and by educators dedicated to the success of teachers and students. It is organized based on research principles, learning trajectories, and knowledge of how teachers use materials in order to promote student success.

Three overarching principles - learning, teaching, and equity - are foundational to the development and design of the curriculum. Students learn by making mathematical connections; developing conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application; solving problems in mathematical and real-world contexts; and, discussing and defending their reasoning using precise language.
